Nassir
What an aspiring journey this student is on! Great to hear how he sprinkled in a good mix of Scrimba’s free courses and our podcasts in his development journey. Nassir said it best in his last 3 words… “Never give up!” 💪
Rían
Meet Rían Errity 🇮🇪!
He's a Scrimba student who started learning to code as a child. Today, he studies Computer Science and Language, a study program that marries his interest in linguistics with his passion for computing. He has also recently completed an internship with Microsoft!
In this interview, Rían talks about his love for computers, growing up with Linux, how he ended up choosing his study program (hint: there was YouTube involved), and whether he actually needs a CS degree. Alex and Rían discuss what self-taught developers might be missing out on compared to developers who are learning to code at a university and what universities could learn from bootcamps and online platforms like Scrimba. You'll also hear all about Rían's internship at Microsoft and learn about his journey from Dublin, where he was competing with 16000 candidates, to former Skype offices in Tallinn, Estonia!
This episode is jam-packed with actionable advice, but it also brings you an exciting story brimming with enthusiasm! ✨
Christian
Christian has been hired following a successful Scrimba scholarship application. Not a lot of words but you can feel Christian’s joy at having achieved his goal! 🏆
Furthermore by Christian:
Here, Christian leaned on his ingenuity to land a local developer job. He let his personality shine and ultimately found a company that was willing to help to him realize his developer dream and give him a chance despite his lack of CS degree 🌟
Christian found Scrimba’s JavaScript course helpful, among others.
Marleigh
Active in the Scrimba community from the very start of her coding journey, Marleigh assisted other members so regularly that she was soon awarded the position of Community Hero (Scrimba’s version of a moderator) 💜 Her perseverance and hard work paid off when she advanced to her dream position in the company where she was already employed. Congratulations, Marleigh 🥳
Daniel
When prospects were looking bleak during the lockdown, Daniel began to search for an alternative learning platform. He tried many avenues, then discovered the power of Scrimba’s interactive scrims 👾 What is a scrim? A recorded coding lesson that allows students to learn from high-level instructors then, almost like magic🪄, interact with the code directly in the browser. Try our free courses for yourself 😉
Heyrockme
Heyrockme has got a foot in the door with a part-time developer position in the energy sector ⚡️ Woohoo! 🥳
Erick
Scrimba is not just for self-taught devs! Erick is a college student who found that their resume was a little sparse. By completing the Frontend Developer Career Path in one month (woah! 🏎️), they were able to pad out their CV and get noticed by hiring managers! 👀 Congratulations on your motivation and success, Erick! ✨
Michael
Meet Michael Robards 🇺🇸!
Michael is a career changer whose path to becoming a developer was a long and winding one: he was a business analyst and a personal trainer; he worked front of house and managed restaurants; he studied biology and worked in customer service. Eventually, he got a developer job at Coca-Cola! 🐻❄️
In this episode, Michael shares his story and his approach to learning and getting a job. He did a lot of things right, and he's also a proof that it's never too late for a career change.
Michael and Alex also talk about imposter syndrome, difficulties of learning to code while having a full-time job, differences between big and small companies, and why having to keep on learning is a great thing about working in tech.
AreSteike
AreSteike is living the dream after being hired as a full-stack developer! 😃 They used the skills they learned on Bob Ziroll’s React course to build a dashboard for an existing project.
Emre
Emre has worked hard and landed a job at an international company. He looks to inspire others on their coding journey with his story, just as previous “I got hired” stories inspired him 🤩
Tobias
Desire! That’s what it takes to succeed as a student of code, as evidenced by this father or 4 who also holds down full time employment 🌟 Tobias ran into some challenges but, instead of giving up, he adapted and made the necessary changes to navigate his journey to a successful conclusion. Congratulations, Tobias!
ItoroMfon
How can you not feel happy for ItoroMfon from Nigeria? His success came from an offer a half a world away - namely a Canadian startup! That is the industry that you too can break into with dedication and focus 🎯
James
Meet James Marriott 🇬🇧!
He's a software developer and a career changer who previously worked in education, project management, and communications. He devoted himself to learning to code during a lockdown because he likes making things!
In this episode, you'll hear how he found a way to get more comfortable coding in front of interviewers by streaming on YouTube, avoided emails to stay motivated, and ultimately landed a job at a company that perfectly fits his personality.
James also talks about impostor syndrome, the importance of finding a community, and how being open about not knowing something can benefit you in the long run. He and Alex also discuss whether coding skills alone are enough to land you your first job and whether your previous work experience is relevant when you're breaking into tech.
